The Boiler Salamander

Keep it warm

A lizard-like animal that lives in a building's boiler. While it is kept warm the building does not burn. It has been evicted twice.

What it looks like, and what it does

A slender amber salamander the length of a forearm, curled on the firebrick inside an open boiler door. Flame ripples running along its back. Steam pipes ticking. A hand-lettered sign: DO NOT DISTURB.

Sleeps in the firebox. Moves to the warmest part of the plant. Is tended by whoever has the key.

What is known

Janitors of the Marlowe Building have known of it since 1923. The building has had no fire in a century, though its wiring and lift motors are original.

In 1971 a contractor replaced the boiler. The new boiler failed within a week and the building suffered three small fires. The old boiler was reinstalled and the animal returned.

What it can do

  • Protects the building it lives in from fire
  • Stores heat and gives it back in cold weather

Where it stops

  • Cannot leave the boiler it was born in
  • Sickens when the building has stood empty for a month

An encounter

Hassan found it dull-coloured and cold the morning after the heating contractors left. He wrapped it in his coat and carried it against his chest for two hours until it flared. He has since put a sign on the door. The sign is not for visitors. It is a note to the next janitor.

What is established, and what is only said

  • established: The building has an uninterrupted fire-free record since 1923, against a local rate of one fire per decade per similar building.
  • rumor: That it keeps a particular person warm, and has done for sixty years.
  • incomplete: Thermal readings are consistent over fourteen years. The warmest person has not been identified.

Still unresolved

A thermal imager shows it is always exactly as warm as the warmest person in the building. Who that person is has changed over the decades.

Stories about it

  • The Salamander in the Boiler at Mercy General (Grotesque encounter, 4 min) — A maintenance engineer at Mercy General hospital descends to the old boiler house to bleed a radiator, and finds a lizard the length of his arm curled in the warm grate, its breathing matched to the pulse of the ward above.

Connected entities

  • The Ash Stag — Both stand between people and fire. One comes after the burn. The other prevents it.
