The Cinder Veil
It wasn't so bad, was it?
A drifting colony of fine grey spores that settles over a district after a fire and rewrites its memory of it. Afterwards the town remembers something gentler.

What it looks like, and what it does
A grey veil like high cirrus at ground level drifting through a burnt valley, spores sifting onto roofs and washing lines. People in the street, slightly puzzled, soot on their sleeves. A church clock a different time from the one on the memorial.
Rises on warm smoke. Settles at dawn. Is thickest in streets where the fire was worst.
What is known
After the Pennard fire, survivors disagreed sharply with the insurers' records. They recalled a smaller blaze, and no one lost.
The memorial plaque lists eleven names. Residents hold up the plaque and cannot read it. Those who left the district the night of the fire read it without difficulty.
What it can do
- Alters a community's shared memory of a disaster
- Spreads on warm smoke over many kilometres
Where it stops
- Cannot affect those who left the district before the spores settled
- Is washed from the air by heavy rain within a day
An encounter
Thorne arrived from outside the valley and drove through a haze that smelled like warm paper. At the village hall the survivors told her, with one voice, that it had been a minor fire. She read them the list of the dead. They nodded politely, as if it were the list of a different village.

What is established, and what is only said
- established: Interviews of those inside and outside the valley after three fires show consistent divergence in recall.
- incomplete: No spore has been successfully cultured. All print as the same ring with a gap.
- interpretation: It may be a mercy. It may be the thing the survivors owe the dead, and have not paid.
Still unresolved
Every spore print shows the same pattern: a circle with a gap.
