The Keeper Who Became the Light

Mind the light

A lighthouse keeper whose eyes are now the lamp. The beam sweeps from a face in the upper window.

What it looks like, and what it does

A tall white lighthouse on a black promontory. In the lantern room, instead of a lens, a face in profile, eyes shuttering and opening, the beam leaving through both. A keeper's coat on a hook below.

Keeps the sequence without fail. Turns his head by degrees through the night. Is brought a flask each morning, which he does not touch.

What is known

Anselm Rudd kept the light at Skerry Head for thirty-one years. In the storm of 1958 the lamp failed. Rudd climbed to the lantern and was found at dawn still there, and the light was lit.

He no longer eats or sleeps. Ships steer by him. His eyelids close to give the beat of the sequence: two long, one short. The relief keepers dust around him.

What it can do

  • Projects a beam from his eyes that reaches forty kilometres
  • Reads the weather in the sea's colour

Where it stops

  • Must keep the sequence or the light fails
  • Cannot look away from the sea

An encounter

Hoare was told not to speak to him. On her fourth night she told him the weather was due to turn. He nodded without breaking the sequence, and in the morning the trawlers were already in. She left a flask by his chair and, a week later, found it exactly where she had put it, and warm.

What is established, and what is only said

  • established: Mariners' logs confirm continuous light at Skerry Head for sixty-six years without a recorded lamp.
  • rumor: That the previous keeper was also the light.
  • interpretation: The tower may need a keeper more than a lamp. He may be the first to have been told.

Still unresolved

The published sequence for the light has not changed since 1858, the year the tower was built. Rudd's sequence matches it to the second.

Where it has been recorded

  • Skerry Head (confirmed) — Recorded by Dilys Hoare, relief keeper.

Connected entities

  • The Anchorite — Both guide ships from a fixed place by sound or light. Both are looked after by the crews who steer by them.
