The Quorum

It takes as many as are looking

A courteous man in a brown coat who exists in exact proportion to his audience. One observer sees one man. Five see five, each doing something different in the same room.

What it looks like, and what it does

A middle-aged man in a brown wool coat, ordinary to the point of being unmemorable. In a group, each copy is caught in a different small gesture: tying a shoe, reading a notice, wiping a glass. The shadows fall in different directions.

Enters rooms where people wait. Takes up the activity nobody present is doing. Does not address groups. Speaks to an individual only if they are alone with him, and then asks quietly whether they are the only one.

What is known

Reported in waiting rooms, bus shelters and registry offices, wherever strangers have been left to wait. He is first noticed as a single man, then, as heads turn, as several. Counts taken by independent observers match to the head.

Alone with one witness he is only one man, lonely and apologetic. Observers describe an unease with no object: the sense of having been counted.

What it can do

  • Multiplies in direct proportion to the number of people watching, up to the whole room
  • Each copy takes up whatever its observer is not doing: the nap, the call, the leaving

Where it stops

  • Cannot exist unobserved; in a dark or empty room he is simply not there
  • Loses one copy for every observer who looks away

An encounter

Adeyemi counted eleven men in brown coats among forty-one applicants and went to find his supervisor. When they returned there were four. The supervisor saw one man and was visibly distressed by the question.

Kofi Adeyemi, security guard, Regional licensing office, Hall B, A Tuesday, 14:10

What is established, and what is only said

  • established: Counts by independent observers agree to the individual across eleven recorded sightings.
  • rumor: That a large enough crowd would see not a crowd of him but a single man standing in an empty square.
  • interpretation: He may not be multiplied by attention but divided by it: one stranger, shared out among those who needed one.

Still unresolved

When he is observed by everyone at once, nothing is recorded of what he does. The records of those occasions are blank in a way that looks deliberate.

Stories about it

  • The Quorum at Hanok Road (Entity story, 3 min) — A tenants' association meeting at Hanok Road is called to order by a courteous man in a brown coat who is seen by one attendee as one man, by five as five, and by the whole hall as the entire committee they had hoped to elect.
  • Eleven in Hall B (Witness account, 2 min) — A security guard counts the people in a waiting room, and then counts the same man eleven times.
