The Seamstress of Last Words

She hems what was never said

A seamstress seen at night in tailors' workrooms, stitching sentences into the hems of coats. Whoever wears such a coat finds, sooner or later, that they are saying it.

What it looks like, and what it does

A narrow figure in a grey apron at a treadle machine, hands moving over thread that cannot be seen. A pale, tidy face turned to the work. A tape measure around her neck, its numbers written as words. Coats hanging behind her, hems very slightly weighted.

Selects coats whose owners have carried an unsaid sentence for five years or more. Works without light. Vanishes if addressed by name, and answers to no name tried.

What is known

Met in closed workrooms between midnight and four, working quickly. The coats she hems are returned to their owners unmarked, each with a line of nearly invisible stitching along the lower edge.

Unpicked, the stitching reads as a sentence: something the owner never said to someone, in the owner's own cadence. Owners who wear the coat for a season report an urge to say it. Some do. The outcomes go unrecorded, which she seems to prefer.

What it can do

  • Stitches an unspoken sentence into a hem
  • Brings its wearer to say it, at the moment when it is least safe to

Where it stops

  • Cannot sew into a garment that is being worn
  • Her work comes undone if someone else says the sentence aloud first

An encounter

Seo had worked alone for forty years and knew the sound of every machine. He heard a treadle he did not own. In the morning a customer's overcoat, left for repair, was already hemmed. He unpicked the line to read it, then sewed it back exactly, and told the customer nothing.

Mr. Seo Dong-ho, master tailor, Back workroom of a tailor's, Hanok-ro, An autumn night, 02:40

What is established, and what is only said

  • established: Fourteen unpicked hems have been read. All fourteen were addressed to a living person.
  • rumor: That she was an apprentice who never delivered one particular coat.
  • incomplete: Two owners who said the sentence aloud declined to say what followed.

Still unresolved

The sentences are never cruel. They are only late. Why does she hem the ones that would have mattered?

Where it has been recorded

  • Hanok-ro (confirmed) — Recorded by Mr. Seo Dong-ho, master tailor.

Stories about it

  • What Was Never Hemmed (Entity story, 4 min) — A tailor working past two in the morning hears a treadle he does not own, and by daylight a customer's overcoat is finished with a hem that says, in stitches, the sentence the customer never managed.

Connected entities

  • The Late Guest — Both finish what the living left undone: a meal, a sentence. Records of both note that the result is warm.
  • The Unsent — Both complete sentences that were not said in time.
