It burns for those awake

What it looks like, and what it does
A tall hawthorn hedge along a lane at three in the morning, every thorn tipped with a pinprick of cold white light. Dark farmhouses behind it. At the windows, faint figures sitting upright. The glow pulsing slightly, like a shared pulse.
Begins to glow at midnight. Reaches its brightest at 03:00. Fades with the first light.
What is known
Hedges at Duncombe glow after midnight. Farmers noted that the glow tracked the number of lit bedroom windows. When the windows went dark the hedge kept glowing. It is lit by those awake in the dark, not in the light.
Brightness peaked in the week of the harvest failure in 1976 and the week of the foot-and-mouth cull. It falls to nothing at Christmas. Those awake at night look to it for company.
What it can do
- Glows in proportion to the wakefulness of the households around it
- Bears haws that ease sleeplessness without dulling dreams
Where it stops
- Does not respond to a single sleepless person; it needs a district
- Dark in the presence of daylight
An encounter
Pugh walked the lane at three with a dog and no torch. The hedge lit his path. At the third gate every thorn went out together, and he stood in the dark. In the morning there was a ring of flattened grass in the lane, as of a very large animal lying down. His dog would not go near it.

What is established, and what is only said
- established: Brightness readings correlate with a district sleep survey at 0.82 across five years.
- incomplete: The two blackout nights fell on the third week of the same month, a year apart.
- rumor: That something rests in the lane when the hedge is dark.
Still unresolved
On two nights the hedge went out entirely at 03:11, while the farms were awake. On both mornings there was a ring of pressed grass in the lane.
