A metal-detecting forum thread follows a signal that moves when it is dug, and reaches the poster's own home.

**Thread: "Odd signal, same spot, three times — anyone else?"**

Hi all. Long-time lurker, first real post. I've got a field near Ketterby on a permission. Been going back every weekend. There's a signal, 6 inches down, that I get on the Deus every time at the same spot, clean, repeatable, 77 on the VDI. I dig it, and there's nothing there. Hole's empty. Go back the week after, same signal, same spot. Any ideas?

Sounds like a deep iron plough fragment or a mineralised patch. Or you're pinpointing wrong.
**dig_deep_dave** — 14 Sep, 20:11
Thanks Rita. I did the cross-check. It's not the ground. It's definitely something. When I dig down it's like it moves under the coil.

Does the signal move *away* from the digging or *with* it?
**dig_deep_dave** — 14 Sep, 21:35
Away, I think. A bit deeper each time. 6 inches, then 9, now 14.

Fill it back in. Leave it alone.

Update. I ignored the advice. Dug to 22 inches. Hit something. Soft. I thought it was a root. It was warm. I put my hand in and it felt like a sleeve. There was cloth.

Dave, stop. Be careful. If it's human remains you need to call the police and stop immediately. It's the law.
**dig_deep_dave** — 21 Sep, 18:31
It isn't remains. It's folded. It's a folded coat. A brown coat, wool, damp, and very clean. No holes. It looks new.
**old_hamish** — 21 Sep, 18:40
Put it back.
**dig_deep_dave** — 21 Sep, 18:52
I've taken a photo. In the photo you can see my hand and the coat. And there's a shadow on the coat that isn't mine.

Dave, who's with you?
**dig_deep_dave** — 21 Sep, 18:59
Nobody. I'm on my own. Nobody in the field. It's gone dusk. I'm going to leave it.

Went back this morning with the dog. The trench is empty. Soil's smooth, as if it's never been dug. The signal isn't there. I swept the whole plot. Nothing. I think it's gone.
**old_hamish** — 28 Sep, 07:40
It's not gone. It moved.
**dig_deep_dave** — 28 Sep, 07:45
Moved where?
**old_hamish** — 28 Sep, 07:46
To where you live.

Guys. I've got the signal in my house. I don't know how. I took the detector to check the coil and I swept the hallway out of habit and I got it. 77 on the VDI. In the carpet. In the floor of my own hall. I've pulled up the boards. There's nothing but concrete. It's under the concrete.
**ringpull_rita** — 30 Sep, 23:20
Dave, please get out of the house.
**dig_deep_dave** — 30 Sep, 23:31
It's following me round the house. It's in the bedroom now. It's under the bed. It's just a tone. A nice clean tone, like it's pleased to see me. Hang on, I'll check something.
**dig_deep_dave** — 30 Sep, 23:44
Odd. I swept my own arm. For fun. It's in me.
**old_hamish** — 30 Sep, 23:50
Dave. What's the depth reading?
**dig_deep_dave** — 30 Sep, 23:52
Six inches. And going down.
