Room 9, Halls

A student maintenance portal tracks a resident who is moved to a room that has not yet been let.

**Ashby Hall — Residence Maintenance Portal**
**Resident:** Kavita Rao, Room 9 (Block C) · **Tenancy:** 1 Sept–30 June

**Request 1 (20 Sept)** *Category: Heating*
The radiator in my room is always warm even though I turn it off. It's fine but I'd like to save energy.

**Reply (Housing Office, 22 Sept):** The radiator has been checked. It is working normally. The thermostat is set by the central system. No action required.

**Request 2 (30 Sept)** *Category: Noise*
Someone is using the shower in Room 10 very late at night. It's quiet, but it goes on for almost an hour. Room 10 is empty (the door has a notice saying "vacant"). I looked through the keyhole once and saw only a dark room.

**Reply (Housing Office, 2 Oct):** Room 10 is vacant. The pipes may be settling. We have asked the plumber to check.

**Request 3 (9 Oct)** *Category: Electrical*
The light in my room keeps switching on at around 3 am. I thought it might be the sensor, so I've covered it with tape. It still does it. When it switches on, the room is exactly as I left it, except the desk lamp is turned towards the bed.

**Reply (Housing Office, 11 Oct):** Electricians checked the circuit. No fault found. Please make sure no cables are plugged into the multi-socket by the bed.

**Request 4 (15 Oct)** *Category: Other*
I think someone is coming into my room when I'm out. Things are moved. My books are re-shelved. They are in the right order, but not my order. I arrange them by colour. They're now arranged by size.

I wondered if it was a flatmate. But I'm in a single study room.

**Reply (Housing Office, 17 Oct):** Room 9 is a single study room. Nobody else has access to your key. Please keep your door locked.

**Request 5 (21 Oct)** *Category: Other*
I stayed up to see. At 2:40 the lock turned. Not a key. The latch drew back on its own. The door opened about six inches and stayed there. I stayed with my phone torch on.

Nobody came in. But the floor creaked, three steps, to the end of the bed. A weight on the mattress, near my feet. Not heavy. I could see the blanket dip. I said "hello." The dent shifted a few inches and the bed made the sound a bed makes when someone sits up to hear.

**Reply (Housing Office, 23 Oct):** We are sorry to hear you have been disturbed. If you wish to move to a different room, please complete the transfer form.

· · ·

**Request 6 (25 Oct)** *Category: Room transfer*
I'd like to transfer to a different room, please. Any room. In any block.

**Reply (Housing Office, 27 Oct):** Transfer approved. You will be moved to Room 14 (Block A) on 1 November. Your current room will be cleaned and made ready for the next resident.

I found a note under my door. It's a printed slip from the housing office, with a room number and a move-in date. It says: "Kavita Rao, Room 9, Block C. Move-in: 1 September. Tenancy: until further notice."

I don't understand. I've lived here since September. This must be an old slip.

**Reply (Housing Office, 30 Oct):** Our records show that Room 9 has been vacant since 2019. A student, Kavita Rao, was resident in Room 9 from September 2018 to October 2019. She did not renew her tenancy. We have no record of any current resident by that name.

**Request 8 (1 Nov)** *Category: Room transfer (completed)*
Moved to Room 14, Block A. Everything is fine. The room is clean, bright and quiet. No one has come in.

I'm writing to say thank you. I'd also like to mention that I've just unpacked my books, and they are arranged by size.

**Reply (Housing Office, 3 Nov):** We are glad you are settled. Please note that you are the first resident of Room 14. The room has not been let before. The transfer slip you were given has your name on it. It says, under *Tenancy*: until further notice.
