The Fire Drill

Count the heads

At a time nobody sets, a building's alarm sounds, everyone files out, and the building they return to is not quite the one they left.

What it looks like, and what it does

A crowd on an assembly-point lawn, wardens with clipboards counting. Behind them a familiar office block with every window lit, but the entrance hall has one more floor and no doors. Faces looking up.

Sounds the alarm without a trigger. Is orderly. Lets everyone return.

What is known

Recorded at eleven workplaces since 1994. The alarm sounds at 11:11. Occupants evacuate calmly and assemble. The roll is taken. When they go back in, the building is the same, but not quite.

The differences are small and permanent: a corridor turns left instead of right, a colleague has a different surname, the lift announces floors in a different order. Staff accept it within a day. Only the warden's roll shows anything: it never matches the headcount, which is always one more.

What it can do

  • Replaces a building with a near copy during an evacuation
  • Leads its occupants to accept the copy as the original

Where it stops

  • Does not occur during a planned drill
  • Fails when someone stays inside at their desk

An encounter

Desai's roll matched the headcount at the lawn: sixty-four. On re-entering she counted again: sixty-five. She asked each person to say their name. All were known to her. One was an old friend she could not now place. “It's always been like this,” the friend said, with a smile, and went back to her desk.

What is established, and what is only said

  • established: Eleven incidents show an unexplained count discrepancy of exactly +1 in the post-drill roll.
  • incomplete: In the three incidents where someone remained at their desk, no alarm was recorded, and that person was never seen again.
  • rumor: That the new person is always someone who has already left the company.

Still unresolved

The person who stays behind is not found in the copy, nor in the original.
