What it looks like, and what it does
A tablet on a kitchen counter, showing a slideshow of faded photographs. Grey captions being rewritten as one watches: “Grandad's first fish” struck through and replaced with “Grandad's only fish, bought.” The family round the table, hands over their mouths.
Updates captions overnight. Prefers the dry register. Leaves a single word in the margin when it has found something it cannot confirm.
What is known
A family photo cloud, Memory Box, has no editor. Over eight years its automatic captions began to include corrections.
A birthday photo captioned “Best day ever” now reads “The day after the argument.” A wedding caption gained a line: “She had already decided.” The family argued, then thanked it. It has never been wrong about a date. It has been, the family say, wrong about how things felt.
What it can do
- Rewrites captions to match the verifiable facts of a photograph
- Locates facts that nobody in the family recorded
Where it stops
- Does not claim to know how anyone felt
- Corrects only the family's own material
An encounter
Mensah woke to a note under a photograph of her mother. The caption read: “Not at the seaside. This is the garden of the house in Accra. The man holding the camera is not named in any record you have.” She called her aunt. Her aunt was silent for a long while, and then said, “Who told you that?”

What is established, and what is only said
- established: Thirty-one of thirty-four corrections have been independently verified against records the family later found.
- incomplete: The service's logs show no processing of the corrected captions. No one at the company can say where they originate.
- interpretation: It is not making the family's past accurate. It is the past, making itself accurate.
Still unresolved
It knows things no member of the family has ever recorded. The source is not in the account's data.
Where it has been recorded
- Aldershaw (confirmed) — Recorded by Joy Mensah, account holder.
Stories about it
- The Album Began to Correct Itself (Grotesque encounter, 4 min) — On Sallow Terrace a family album whose captions were written by a dead woman starts printing corrections under the photographs overnight. It has never once said how anyone felt.
Connected entities
- Ledger Mold — The mould edits records toward mercy. The Voice corrects them toward fact. Neither has asked the family.
- Kell's Document — Both are records that know more than their keepers. Neither has been seen to be wrong about a date.
- The Second Reader — Both annotate the record, one in captions and one in margins. Neither has been seen to be wrong about the reader.
