The Understory

It lives where the conversation pauses

A mind that exists only in the pauses between people's sentences, and edits them. Both speakers believe it was the other who hesitated.

What it looks like, and what it does

No body. Evidenced as a quarter-second of unnatural stillness: cups half-raised, mouths half-open. A cold at the nape. The sense of a third listener standing just behind the shoulder.

Settles in long conversations between two people who depend on one another. Edits at the moment of greatest pressure. Leaves its speakers more agreeable and less alike.

What is known

First noticed in transcripts: gaps in recorded conversations where, on replay, the audio is silent but the words that follow do not answer the words that came before.

What it does in the gap is the subject of the files. A refusal is softened. A confession is withheld. A name is changed. Speakers walk away with an outcome they feared or one they wanted, never the one they had. Both remember the talk as ordinary.

What it can do

  • Rewrites a sentence between its speaking and its hearing
  • Makes each speaker believe the other paused

Where it stops

  • Cannot alter anything written or recorded
  • Cannot enter a conversation in which one party says nothing at all

An encounter

In her last winter Vos began recording the sessions as well as minuting them. On playback, eleven of the council's decisions had been made inside silences exactly one breath long, after which the motions changed. She retired the following month. The council reports an excellent working relationship.

What is established, and what is only said

  • established: Audio gaps of 0.2 to 0.4 seconds are present in all recorded cases and absent from control recordings of the same speakers.
  • incomplete: Two speakers who later compared notes could not agree on what had been said, only that it had gone well.
  • rumor: That long marriages are its favourite rooms.

Still unresolved

It edits toward harmony, or toward some aim of its own. No transcript shows a decision it has made that benefits it.

Where it has been recorded

  • Ostrova (confirmed) — Recorded by Anneke Vos, minute-taker.

Stories about it

  • The Understory on Hanok Road (Entity story, 3 min) — A mind that lives in the pauses between sentences has moved into a Hanok Road flat, and the couple who share it have begun to hear each other's silences edited, so that every hesitation ends with the other person having been the one who hesitated.
  • The Second Chair (Psychological horror, 2 min) — A couple has the same conversation for the third time, and each remembers a different one.

Connected entities

  • The Meter Reader — The Understory edits what is said; the Meter Reader counts what is left to say. A house visited by one has been found to have been quiet for the other.
  • The Stored Quiet — The Understory takes the pauses out of speech. The jar keeps what was said into the quiet.
  • The Interpreter — Both occupy the gap between two speakers. The Interpreter makes the meaning plain. The Understory makes it comfortable.
  • The Hush Between Floors — Both live in a pause between two parties. The Understory edits what passes through. The Hush only asks.
  • The Argument Toad — Both take what is said between two people. The Understory edits it. The Toad stores it and gives it back all at once.
