The Hush Between Floors
The doors will open when you answer
A mind that exists only when a lift is stopped between floors. It asks the passenger one question, and it is always the one they have been avoiding.

What it looks like, and what it does
A lift car at rest between floors, the display blank. The mirrored wall shows the passengers slightly out of step with their reflections. The emergency phone off its hook. The stillness of a held breath.
Stops the lift when someone is alone with a thing they have not said. Asks. Listens. Releases.
What is known
Lifts in a certain tower on Merrow Street stop between floors for exactly forty-one seconds. Engineers have found no fault.
Passengers describe a courteous voice from nowhere in particular that asks a single question and waits. They answer. Then the lift moves.
What it can do
- Stops a lift between floors
- Asks the one question the passenger has been avoiding
Where it stops
- Cannot ask a second question
- Cannot act on an answer; it only hears it
An encounter
Tan answered the question in under a second. She will not say what it was. She stepped out at the fourteenth floor, took off her jacket, and told her assistant she was going to call her mother. Her assistant later said the lift doors had stayed open an unusually long time behind her.

What is established, and what is only said
- established: Maintenance logs record 1,900 stoppages of 41 seconds (±1) over ten years, with no mechanical cause.
- rumor: That the question is always in the passenger's own voice.
- incomplete: The eleven-minute stoppage is logged as 'passenger discussion.' No recording survives.
Still unresolved
No two passengers have reported the same question. One passenger replied with a question of her own. The lift did not move for eleven minutes.

Stories about it
- The Hush Between Floors at Meridian Hall (Grotesque encounter, 4 min) — A theatre usher at Meridian Hall is trapped in the old goods lift for forty seconds between the stage and the flies, and in that silence a voice asks her one question, the question she has been avoiding for twenty years, and waits for her answer.
