**Librarian's note (Frances Hale, 15 Oct)**
I've been asked to chase this one. Card 88412 is the old borrower card, and it has no active account behind it. The system accepted a renewal from it anyway, and the renewal was made in person, at the desk, at 03:14. The desk has no staff at night. The desk CCTV shows a man in a grey suit, standing at the counter, holding the book in both hands, and holding out his card for the stamp.
I did not recognise the man. When I checked the photograph against the 1989 borrower's record, it matches. He looks exactly the same.

**Letter from Millbrook Library to the estate of Owen Dacre (16 Oct)**
Dear Sir or Madam,
The estate has an outstanding debt to this library. Please arrange for the return of the item, or contact us to discuss payment.
*The library notes that the estate's executor, Mr. Thomas Dacre, has been dead since 2004, and that his estate was closed in 2005.*

**Reply from Mr. Owen Dacre (received 19 Oct, handwritten, on the back of the 1989 receipt)**
*Dear Miss Hale,*
*I'm sorry to have kept the volume so long. I wanted to finish it. The last chapter is about a house with twelve rooms, and each room is kept for someone who never came back. I've been reading it at the kitchen table for thirty-seven years, and I've reached the twelfth room, and I've found that the door is open.*
*I'm not sure I can return it. The book won't leave the house. Every time I try to carry it to the door, the floor tilts, and I'm back in my chair, and the page has been turned.*
*Please don't send anyone. I'd like to finish the book properly. I'll be done soon.*
· · ·
**Librarian's note (Frances Hale, 22 Oct)**
The renewal went through again overnight. The new due date is 22 Oct, next year. Whoever renewed it left a bookmark in the twelfth volume, a strip of card, and written on it in pencil: *Room 12. The one that's always left open. Please come and check on me.*
I went to the address on the card. The house has been empty since 1989. The kitchen table is set for one. The chair is pushed out. A single sheet of paper lies on the table, face down, with a pencil beside it.

*Note: the borrower's record shows a staff card, active, with no renewals. The item is listed under the staff member's name. Staff member is recorded as present at the library desk, reading the volume at the counter, and has been since 22 October, though the library has been closed to the public all week.*

**Final notice (Millbrook Public Library, 28 Oct)**
Item *The Hollow Volumes*, vol. 12 of 12 is now listed as *not for loan*. Please do not attempt to return this item. The library has been asked to remind all borrowers that overdue items are the responsibility of the reader.
*Please return it to the shelf where you found it. It's not the book that has been overdue. It's the reader who was never finished.*
