Kell's Document

It is written. It is already written.

A man whose skin carries a fine script that updates daily with the records of the town he lives in. He can read himself, and does.

What it looks like, and what it does

A man seated under a lamp, forearms and chest covered in small neat black script in ledger columns, some lines fresh and wet. A magnifying glass. His eyes moving down his own arm.

Rises at five. Reads his arms, his chest, his legs. Copies out what is new on to the town register by hand, and is rarely corrected.

What is known

Anselm Kell, municipal clerk of Brannock, noticed a line of text on his wrist after the flood of 1996. By winter he had a hundred.

The script is the town's record: births, sales, complaints, deaths, small thefts, who has been seen with whom, entered in the order that they happen. It matches the registers the next day. Nobody knows who is writing. Kell reads himself every morning and has begun to notice things about the town that the town does not.

What it can do

  • Carries a live record of his town on his skin
  • Knows an event before the register does

Where it stops

  • Records only the town of Brannock
  • Cannot read the back of his own shoulders

An encounter

Quint compared his forearm with the register for a month. They matched to the comma. On the thirty-first day she found a line on his wrist she had not yet entered: her own name and a date, nine days away, with the word “resigned.” She resigned on the ninth day and told no one why.

What is established, and what is only said

  • established: A photographed month of entries was matched to registers the following day: 1,180 of 1,184 lines agree.
  • incomplete: Four lines disagree because the register was later corrected to match.
  • interpretation: The register may be what follows the script, not the reverse.

Still unresolved

A passage on his left shoulder blade has been blank for years. He will not let anyone look at it. He says it is not blank.

Where it has been recorded

  • Brannock (confirmed) — Recorded by Dolores Quint, registrar.

Connected entities

  • The Tidy Voice — Both are records that know more than their keepers. Neither has been seen to be wrong about a date.
